Get help from Quitline

Throughout the process of quitting, it’s important you get as much help as you need. That’s why there’s a special service set up for all Queenslanders to give them support along their quit journey.

What is Quitline?

Quitline is a telephone service dedicated to helping Queenslanders quit smoking.

Call 13 7848, or request a call from Quitline below. Please note: Quitline calls from a private number. You can speak to a Quitline counsellor between 7am and 10pm, 7 days a week. Outside of these hours, a customer service assistant will record your details and arrange for a counsellor to call you back during service hours.

What to expect:

  • Expert advice and assistance from genuine people.
  • Tailored support to suit your specific needs.
  • Encouragement and resources to help you quit.
  • Quitline creates a confidential record, so that each time you make contact, the counsellors can pick up where you left off.
  • You will be asked if you identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander. If you do, you have the option to speak with an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander counsellor.
  • Quitline has a dedicated team of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander counsellors, both men and women.
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander counsellors are available most days and sometimes after hours. If they aren’t available, you can request a call back at a time that suits you or talk to another member of the team who will support you in a respectful and positive way.

Quitline counsellors can:

  • Work with you to develop a quit plan with personalised strategies.
  • Discuss how to manage cravings or withdrawals, as well as any difficulties you may be having.
  • Chat about products to help you quit, like nicotine replacement therapy and quitting medications.
  • Send you relevant quit support material by email, post or SMS.
  • Answer your questions about smoking, quitting and everything in-between. You don’t have to discuss a quit plan if you’re not ready.

Support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples

Quitline has a team of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff who want to yarn with you about quitting smoking. All Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Queenslanders, who smoke, can join the ‘Yarn to Quit’ program which includes quit support and free nicotine replacement therapy. Call Quitline on 13 7848.

The Quitline service is available 7 days a week from 7am to 10pm. You can also request a call back from a Quitline counsellor in just two easy steps:

Support for pregnant women

Finding out you’re pregnant is the perfect time to quit smoking. Queensland Health’s free, confidential, evidenced based ‘Quit for You…Quit for Baby’ program provides multiple support calls with nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), including gum, lozenges, and patches.

Eligibility

The program is available to pregnant women who smoke and live in Queensland. To find out more, speak to your midwife or call Quitline on 13 7848. The Quit for you - Quit for two App is available to download and has lots of tips on how to beat cravings, distraction games, breathing exercises and baby facts to inspire and motivate you to stay quit.

Support to quit smoking

The My QuitBuddy App is available to download. It's a personalised App to help you on your journey to become smoke-free.

Support for people with chronic illness

Quitline also provide additional support to people with a chronic illness, such as coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It’s never too late to quit smoking, and it’s the best thing you can do for your health. Call Quitline to talk to a counsellor who can provide support for your personal circumstances.

Quitline is committed to attending community and professional events to promote education and awareness of the service. A dedicated team attend these events to engage practitioners and community members with interactive tools, information and resources to support people to quit smoking.
